Hitchen on healthy eating

A few weeks ago I decided to embark on a healthy lifestyle. I was forever hearing people boasting about losing "two and a half kilograms in under a week" and realized that the only way I would lose two and a half kilograms of anything would be if I left a bag of spuds on the checkout counter at Woolies.

So I started by eating fruit, experimenting with a wide variety of exotic and sometimes strange looking fruit - dragon fruit, star fruit, longans, various varieties of mangoes as well as the "common as muck" fruits such as apples and oranges. I did have a thing about bananas for a while until I read that Gordon Brown had begun a nine banana-a-day diet as part of an attempt to sex himself up for the forthcoming election. Not quite sure why he decided on nine bananas - perhaps that number has some sort of special significance to him - The Banana Peel Nine maybe.

But I digress.

A few days ago I bought myself an avocado and placed it on the fruit tray to allow it to ripen. I have just prodded it and it is just about right for a late night snack when I take my break. I have it all planned out.

After a hard days work, I will turn off the pc, pick up the avocado and prepare for a nice, clean living, healthy addition to my diet. First, I will cut into it length wise. then twist the halves in opposite directions and gently pull apart. Then I will thrust the blade of the knife into the pit, twist gently and lift it out. Once that is done I will pull skin off the flesh with my fingers, place the open side down and begin to slice length wise for a pretty presentation.

To finish, I will pour tomato sauce on it and settle down to eat with a bag of chips from the chip-shop as an accompaniment, washed down with a nice cold bottle of coke.

Wherever you may be - be safe
