"Baby Doc" gives message of hope to the land he ruled with a money grabbing fist

Earlier today in i On Global Trends, I published a press release from former Republican Congressman Bob Barr.

The release proclaimed, " Haiti's Former President Brings Message of Hope to People" referring of course to the surprise return to Haiti of former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, also known as "Baby Doc".

That's all very nice, but the playboy son of the ruthless Fran├žois "Papa Doc" Duvalier gave very few messages of hope to the people of Haiti during his brutal, oppressive and corrupt reign. Which is probably why he was ousted by popular revolution in the first place - a fact that seems to have escaped Bob Barr, a man well versed in practicing self-righteous hypocrisy.

If Baby Doc has returned to Haiti - the Republic of NGOs, and a country which receives millions of dollars in aid, it is not for the good of the people - it is for the good of himself and for the benefit of those in the US, a country that propped him up during his authoritarian rule, who would be quite happy to see turmoil in Haiti.

In March 2010, the Bush-Clinton initiative was hoisted upon the people of Haiti - an initiative they very much resented. During the course of their visit, both Bush and Clinton preached capitalism as the solution to the appalling conditions of life in Haiti.

It would be nice to think that Baby Doc's return to a land he betrayed is purely for humanitarian reasons, and his remorse at the damage he caused, genuine. Being nice is one thing - being totally naive is another - and naive I am not, otherwise I wouldn't have survived in this business so long.

No, Haiti is a land of rich pickings, not for the people of course, but for those who have the power and connections to prosper from the blood, sweat and tears of others.

My hope for the people of Haiti is simple, and possibly just as naive as the title of the press release, but I hope that Baby Doc's US sponsored sojourn results in justice for those who suffered under his reign.

Wherever you may be - be safe
